PRODUCT DESCRIPTION REVIEWS PRINT THE DETAILS
The Clos Fourtet is a Premier Grand Cru Classé in St-Emilion on the right bank of Bordeaux. The vineyard covers 20 hectares planted with 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. It is very well situated on the coast of St-Emilion. For the record, the name Clos Fourtet comes from "Camp Fourtet" which was, in the Middle Ages, a fortified place whose purpose was the defence of the town of St-Emilion. Fortunately times have changed...The property belonged to the Ginestet family until 1948. It was sold to François Lurton in exchange for his share in Château Margaux, and then to Pierre Lurton.
It was in 2001 that the Cuvelier family finally bought Clos Fourtet (they have since also bought Château Poujeaux in Moulis). Since then, the dynamic Mathieu Cuvelier has been in charge of the estate. He has hired the oenologist Stéphane Derenencourt and, in just a few years, the quality of Clos Fourtet's wines has drastically improved. The wines are very dense and modern in style.
